For many foreign-language students, the secondary school classroom provides the only opportunity they get to speak English. For this reason, it is essential that the amount of English they use in the classroom is maximised. Read and listen.
Books closed. Introduce the phrase social network. Ask students to name some examples of social network sites (e g. Facebook, Twitter, MySpace) and write the names of the sites on the board.

Tell students to open their books at page 4.
Read the question with the class and check that students understand hang out (to spend time informally in a place). Students skim through the text quickly to get a general idea of the content. You may want to pre-teach some of the key vocabulary: leading expert, online presence, accessorise. Once students have read the text, elicit the answer to the question and ask students to summarise its main themes (e.g. teenagers and social networking, online identity, friendship on the internet).
