  This Teacher’s Resource Book contains thirty-one photocopiable activities and further ideas for you to use with New Headway Intermediate, third edition. It is a new component for the Headway series and has been written with two aims in mind:
• to give teachers additional material that revises and extends the work in the Student’s Book
• to give students lots of extra speaking practice!




The sound of murder!
Procedure (20 minutes)
• Explain that students are going to use phonetic symbols to solve a murder. Tell students the details of the crime and check that everyone understands: The famous rock star, Kurt Studman, has been killed. A coded message was sent to the local police station. When the code is broken it reveals details about the name of the murderer, the murder weapon, and an object which was taken.

• Divide students into pairs and give each pair a copy of the worksheet. (If you have an uneven number of students, make one group of three students.) Ask students to read the message which was sent to the police station and identify the eleven sounds that are numbered in the message. Go around helping as necessary.

• Tell students, in their pairs, to decide which phonetic symbol represents each sound 1-11 and then write the phonetic symbol in the Code breaker boxes below the message. Go around checking and helping as necessary.

• When students have completed the Code breaker boxes, ask them to sound out the words to work out the answer for each item (murderer, murder weapon, and object taken). You can make this game competitive by setting a time limit of ten minutes.
